本週我們來學習與老年人相關的詞彙

1. aging /'eidʒiŋ/

n.老化;變老;變舊

搭配:aging population 老齡人口

aging society 老齡化社會

e.g. An aging population poses challenges for healthcare systems as demand for medical services increases.

e.g. An aging society requires government policies that address the needs of older adults, such as pensions and healthcare.

補充:pension n.養老金;退休金

v. age 變老; 使變老;老化

e.g. She has aged gracefully.

e.g. Exposure to the sun has aged her skin.

2. retire/rɪ'taɪə/

v.退休;退職

e.g. Many people would like to stop working, but can’t afford to retire.

e.g. Sue retired from teaching three years ago.

n. retirement n. 退休;退休年齡

e.g. I'm looking forward to retirement.

e.g. Sixty-five was the normal retirement age for men.

raise retirement age

e.g. One proposed solution to address the aging population is to raise the retirement age, encouraging individuals to work longer before claiming pension benefits.

3. empty nester /ˈɛmpti ˈnɛstər/

空巢家長/老人

e.g. Some parents may feel sad or lost when they become empty nesters.

e.g. Empty nesters often embrace a more relaxed lifestyle, spending more time with friends, exercising, or pursuing personal interests.

補充:Empty nester syndrome空巢老人綜合症: refers to parents' feelings of sadness and loss when their children move out of the family home.

e.g. Some common symptoms of empty nester syndrome include loneliness, sadness, and a sense of purposelessness after children move out.

補充:purposelessness n. 無目的的狀態

4. ageism /'eɪdʒɪz(ə)m/

n.對老年人的歧視;年齡歧視

e.g. Ageism in the workplace can prevent older employees from advancing in their careers, despite their wealth of experience.

e.g. As people get older, they begin to experience ageism from younger colleagues who assume they are not tech-savvy.

補充:tech-savvy adj. 精通技術的

5. seniority /siːnɪ'ɒrɪtɪ/

n. 資歷;地位;級別

e.g. Employees who benefit from seniority may receive more vacation days or higher pay as a result of their longer tenure.

補充:tenure任期;任職期間

補充:take advantage of one’s seniority 倚老賣老

e.g. In the workplace, some people take advantage of their seniority to intimidate others, assuming that age or experience automatically gives them authority.
