【英語多益通】劍橋王子誕生 查爾斯聲明當爺爺

在全世界的高度矚目與祝福之下，凱特王妃終於在7月23日生下一名男嬰。女王伊莉莎白二世是第一個得到消息的人；整個英國上下都歡天喜地迎接這個王室寶寶（Royal Baby）的降臨。威廉王子的父親查爾斯王子與其妻卡蜜拉也升格爲阿公阿嬤。威廉王子的生母──那紅顏薄命的黛安娜，若是天堂有知，也應該爲這動人的一刻，感到喜悅。
白金漢宮依慣例在前院豎起牌子，召告英國上下關於王室寶寶誕生的消息。英國王位第一順位繼承人—查爾斯王子，與其妻卡蜜拉立刻發表聲明（statement）。該聲明只有三句話，他說了什麼呢？
第一句話他說：「我與妻子卡蜜拉對於我們第一個孫子的到來感都到欣喜萬分。」
Both my wife and I are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild.
此句堪稱簡易。對你而言，唯一字彙可能是overjoyed。但是你如果知道joy是「高興、歡愉」，而字首「over-」有「超過、過度」之意的話，你應該不難猜出overjoy是比高興更超出的「狂喜、欣喜萬分」。“arrival”是arrive的名詞，詞類變化要在平常閱讀的時候即稍加註意。
第二句話他說：「對威廉與凱特而言，這是一個極爲特別的時刻，而我們都爲他們生下的男嬰而非常高興。」
It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy.
句中的incredibly是林書豪爆紅時代的Linsanity與Lincredible兩字之一incredible的副詞，它原本是「難以置信地」，但衍申爲「極爲、非常、很」。「thrill」是動詞的「興奮、激動」。值得一提的是，thrill也可以指激動到「緊張、毛骨悚然」，而常看到的thriller是指「恐怕電影（小說）」或是刺激到毛孔收縮的「驚險小說、電影」。
第三句話他說：「就像最近幾個月無數和藹可親的人所告訴我的，升格爲祖父母對任何人而言，都是獨特的；所以我非常高興且驕傲的第一次做爺爺，而我們熱切期望在最快的未來看到寶寶。」
Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone’s life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future.
這雖是一個長句，但它只不過是由三個連接詞as、so、and連接四個短句的長句：
句1：Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone’s life.句2：Countless kind people have told me in recent months.句3：I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time.句4：We are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future.
句中的「unique」（獨特的）、「enormously」（巨大地、非常地）、與「look forward to + Ving」（期望、期盼）都是多益測驗的重要字。
多益測驗的Part 6最喜歡用短篇的聲明（statement）、公告（notice）、電子郵件（email）、或是公司內部公文（memo）等等，作爲出題的材料。在此，我們以查爾斯王子的聲明爲題材，試一試你的多益身手：
"Both my wife ____(1.)____ I are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild. It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of ____(2.)____ baby boy.

1.(A) but(B) and(C) or(D) if

解析：第一題的正確答案是(B)。破題的關鍵是both這個字，因爲「both A and B」表示A、B「兩者都」如何如何，所以(B)爲正解。如果是A、B兩者其中之一，亦即非A即B的情況下，要用「either A or B」。答案(A)的but所連接的字義要呈現相反，例如This car is old but reliable.（這輛車很舊，但是性能很可靠。）；答案(D)的if是連接詞，要連接完整的句子。
第二題的正確答案是(C)。破題的關鍵是空格後的受詞baby boy，因爲有此受詞，答案(A)與(C)都造成文意不符；在此應該是「他們的男嬰」。答案(D)的theirs是代替前面所提的東西，它的用法特別之處是後面不能再接名詞，例如「Mary是他們的朋友。」不能說成「Mary is a friend of their. (X)」，而要說成「Mary is a friend of theirs. (O)」，此外，「這書是他們的。」不能說成「This book is their. (X)」，而要說成「This book is theirs.」(O)，在此的theirs即等於their book。此爲多益測驗經常出現的「代名詞」語法題。其他幾個常出現的字爲hers、yours、ours與mine。
第三題的正確答案是(D)。要選出一個副詞來修飾動詞「is looking forward to」（期望），所以選eagerly表示「熱切地期望」。答案(A)是形容詞、答案(B)是名詞、答案(C)是形容詞比較級，皆不符。
這名號稱「劍橋王子」的男嬰的誕生可是世界級的頭條大新聞，因爲這個銜着金湯匙出生的男嬰有可能是未來「日不落國」──大英帝國的國君。相關的英文報導，我們怎能錯過！
